How communication psychology can improve teaching skills
As ELT specialists, our focus is on our students’ language & communication skills. What about our own communication? How do we attend to that? This workshop highlights how a teacher’s communication style can enhance or hinder learner engagement. Practical concepts from communication psychology and intercultural communication that support classroom interaction will be demonstrated and practiced.
Language and Culture in the Classroom Knowing English is no longer only the key to understanding people from English-speaking countries but has opened up communication with the whole world. But understanding someone from a different culture and making yourself understood is not just a question of speaking English well or culture-related knowledge. In our workshops we will experience different methodologies, techniques and the full range of materials – films, stories, drama and games – to combine language and intercultural learning for the benefit of EFL students at different proficiency levels.
Julia Warner started working as a trainer for business English in 1997. In 2010, she completed a coaching certification which has allowed her to combine her experience in language training with her new-found interest: communication psychology. Since then she has completed a combined BA in psychology and sociology, and she is a registered mediator according to the Austrian civil code. She teaches English, but also gives talks and seminars for teachers on how communication psychology can improve teaching skills.
